Eoin Brodie, Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he serves as Deputy Director of the Climate and Ecosystem Sciences Division in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA). He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, and Co-Director of the Joint Berkeley Initiative in Microbiome Sciences (JBIMS).

Dr. Brodie is a microbiologist and biogeochemist who studies how microscopic life shapes the health and resilience of soils, ecosystems, and the planet. His research combines molecular biology, advanced sensing, and computational modeling to understand and predict how microbial communities function, from genes to entire watersheds. By uncovering the rules of microbial organization and activity, his team aims to harness microbiomes to promote sustainable agriculture, ecosystem resilience, and environmental restoration.

He leads Berkeley Lab’s Watershed Function Science Focus Area, which studies how water, nutrients, plants and microbes interact from bedrock to canopy across mountain landscapes, and the Microbial Mechanisms component of the Belowground Biogeochemistry Science Focus Area, focused on how soil microbes drive carbon and nutrient cycling. Dr. Brodie also serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology.
