Dr. Nicola Falco, a Research Scientist and Lead of the Sustainable Agriculture program in the Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division (CESD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), specializes in the development and application of advanced remote sensing and geophysical techniques for ecosystem characterization and monitoring. With over 15 years of experience in hyperspectral signal/image processing, LiDAR, and machine learning, his research aims to enhance the characterization and prediction of ecological processes and their dynamics. Dr. Falco’s work emphasizes integrating multi-scale and multi-source data—such as remote sensing, geophysics, in situ sensor networks, and ground observations—to investigate ecosystem drivers and scale critical ecosystem properties from point measurements to broader landscapes. His expertise extends to ecosystem monitoring, including species composition, biodiversity, vegetation health, biomass, and carbon quantification, as well as contributions to image classification, land-cover/land-use mapping, and multi-temporal analysis.

Dr. Falco was born in Verona, Italy. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy, in 2008 and 2011, respectively. He holds a joint Ph.D. degree (Cotutelle) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Iceland and in Information and Communication Technologies from the University of Trento obtained in 2015. Before joining LBNL, he spent one year as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Signal Processing Laboratory of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty at the University of Iceland (2015-2016).
