As the world’s natural resources dwindle because of increasing contamination and extreme weather events, new and innovative strategies are needed to remediate and preserve the resources we have. From lakes to groundwater, soil to sediment, some microbes naturally function to remediate and restore.
Our scientists are applying systems ecology to develop new methods using microbes to improve Earth’s different environments. This has a significant impact on enhancing carbon sequestration, and on reducing excess nutrients such as nitrogen which can negatively impact waterways.
CESD researchers are also building on their expertise in microbial cycling of organic and inorganic compounds for bioremediation and biotransformation.
